Best Insoles for Flat Feet: A Podiatrist's Honest Guide

Written by our HCPC-registered podiatrist

Do flat feet actually need insoles?

Not always — and we'd rather tell you that honestly than sell you something you don't need. Plenty of people have flat feet (fallen arches, or pes planus) with no pain at all. If yours don't hurt and aren't causing problems elsewhere, you may not need to do anything.

But flat feet do raise the risk of certain problems, and where they're causing pain, the right support can make a real difference.

What flat feet can lead to

When the arch collapses inward on each step — overpronation — it changes how load travels through your foot and up your leg. Over time this can contribute to plantar fasciitis, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, Achilles problems, and strain that travels up to the knee, hip, and lower back.

Off-the-shelf vs bespoke for flat feet

A good off-the-shelf arch-support insole can help mild cases caught early, and it's worth trying first if your symptoms are minor. The limitation is that mass-produced insoles are built to an average arch profile — and significant flat feet are often far from average. A generic insole may not support you correctly, and in some cases can feel worse.

Our bespoke orthotics are prescribed by an HCPC-registered podiatrist following an in-person assessment at your home, then manufactured from a foam impression taken by your podiatrist at an ISO 13485-certified UK lab. Because the correction is built into the shell geometry to your exact foot, they address the specific degree of support your flat feet need — rather than a one-size profile applied to millions.

They're also 3D-printed in renewable PA11 biopolymer, which holds its corrective shape for years rather than compressing within weeks like cheap EVA foam — so for an everyday-use correction, they tend to work out better value over time.

When to see your GP

If you have diabetes, numbness or tingling in your feet, or any open wounds, speak to your GP before using corrective insoles. Sudden, painful flattening of one arch in adulthood should also be assessed, as it can indicate a tendon problem.

The honest bottom line

Try a quality off-the-shelf arch support first if your symptoms are mild. If pain persists, or your flat feet are pronounced, a bespoke prescription designed around your specific foot is the logical next step — and your in-person assessment will tell you honestly whether it's right for you.
