Do I Need Custom Orthotics or Will Insoles Do?

This is one of the most common questions we're asked, and the honest answer is: it depends on your feet, your symptoms, and how long they've been going on. Here's a straightforward way to think about it.

Off-the-shelf insoles are probably fine if:

• Your symptoms are mild and recent
• Your feet are close to average in shape
• You don't have a diagnosed structural issue
• You're using them short-term during recovery from a minor strain

If that's you, try a good-quality off-the-shelf insole first. There's no sense spending more than you need to — and we'll say so on your consultation if we think that's the case.

Bespoke orthotics are worth it if:

• You've already tried off-the-shelf insoles and got temporary relief at best
• You have a pronounced foot type — significant flat feet or high arches
• Your pain has persisted for weeks or months
• You stand all day for work and generic insoles don't last or don't help
• You have pain travelling up the chain — knees, hips, lower back — linked to foot mechanics
• You want the correction made to your exact foot rather than an average

Why the difference exists

Off-the-shelf insoles are made to average dimensions and cushion in a generic way. Our bespoke orthotics are prescribed after an in-person assessment at your home with an HCPC-registered podiatrist and manufactured from a foam impression taken by your podiatrist — laser-scanned to sub-millimetre accuracy (±1.0mm) and 3D-printed in renewable PA11. The support is placed exactly where your foot needs it, to the degree it needs, and holds that shape for years rather than compressing within months.

That's exactly what the in-person assessment is for. Your podiatrist's job is to give you an honest recommendation — including telling you if we don't think bespoke orthotics are right for you. And at £399 all-inclusive, there are no hidden costs to weigh up: the assessment, impression, UK manufacture, and delivery are all covered for North Wales and Chester (£25 travel fee for the Wirral and Liverpool, £40 for Greater Manchester).
