Overpronation Explained: What It Is and Why It Matters

Written by our HCPC-registered podiatrist

What is overpronation?

Pronation is the natural inward roll of your foot as it meets the ground — part of how your foot absorbs shock. Overpronation is when that inward roll is excessive, so the arch collapses too far and the ankle rolls inward on each step. A little pronation is normal and healthy; overpronation is when it becomes enough to alter your mechanics and potentially cause problems.

How do I know if I overpronate?

A few simple signs you can check yourself:

A proper gait assessment is the accurate way to confirm it and measure the degree — which your podiatrist evaluates in person during your assessment.

Why it matters

Overpronation changes how force travels through your foot and up your leg. It's associated with plantar fasciitis, shin splints, Achilles problems, knee pain (the knee can track inward as the foot rolls), and hip and lower back strain. It doesn't always cause pain — plenty of people overpronate mildly with no issues — but where it's significant or symptomatic, correcting it can help prevent problems developing up the chain.

What helps

Supportive, motion-controlling footwear is the starting point. Beyond that, orthotic support designed to control the inward roll and support the arch is the main treatment. For mild cases an off-the-shelf stability insole may help; for pronounced overpronation or existing pain, bespoke orthotics correct to the specific degree your foot needs — built into the shell geometry and made to your exact foot impression.

When to see your GP

Sudden arch collapse, significant pain, or numbness should be assessed in person. Diabetic patients should consult their GP before self-treating.
